The Philosophy of Osteopathy is based on 4 principles. These principles resonate strongly with me and my own personal belief system as a practitioner.
(1) EACH STRUCTURE IN THE BODY SUPPORTS THE BODY’S FUNCTIONS.
The body was designed in such a way that each structure has a system that takes care of itself, and all of the body’s structures support each other and the body as a whole. This is important to me because it supports the idea that everything has a purpose.
(2) THE NATURAL FLOW OF THE BODY’S FLUIDS – LYPHATIC, VASCULAR AND NEUROLOGICAL – MUST BE PRESERVED AND MAINTAINED.
The natural flow of fluids such as blood help the body to carry out all of its functions and for each of its parts to communicate and nourish each other. If any of the body’s fluids are restricted, the body will start to break down.
If you think of the body as a system similar to a car, you can understand that the flow of fluids is necessary for it to work. A car requires gasoline as fuel, oil in the gasket and coolant to regulate the temperature of the engine. Without these fluids the car is unable to drive and the engine will eventually break down.
(3) THE HUMAN BODY IS THE SUM OF IT’S PARTS. PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, SOCIAL, SPIRITUAL AND COGNITIVE SYSTEMS DON’T WORK INDEPENDENTLY – THEY WORK IN HARMONY.
Since every part of the body is connected, we need to focus on creating alignment and health between all systems within the body, including its emotional and spiritual components. If we don’t pay attention to all parts of the system, eventually some parts will be forced to overcompensate for the ones that we pay less attention to. By overcompensating in one area, we are overusing that area and creating strain and stress. Hence, the importance of creating balance and alignment in every state: physical, emotional, spiritual and so on.
(4) WHEN THE BODY HAS NO RESTRICTIONS, IT HAS THE INHERENT ABILITY TO HEAL ITSELF.
The idea that the body has an innate ability to heal itself really resonates with me. In combination with the three principles above I strongly believe that our bodies are equipped with the self regulatory systems required to combat any dysfunction, condition or disease. My job is to help clear the restrictions and help your body to remember its magnificent abilities.
